Valium (diazepam) is a medicine that belongs to the class of benzodiazepines. It can be used to treat anxiety disorders as well as agitation, shakiness, and hallucinations resulting from the patient's attempt to withdraw from drinking alcohol. Valium can form a habit and is therefore supposed to be used only by people to whom it was prescribed. It's therefore very important that you always take the right dose prescribed and never exceed the dose – as otherwise an overdose is possible or you may develop an addiction to this medicine. Your doctor needs to know if you are taking any other medications - such as medications for depression, probenecid, asthma meds, sedatives, vitamins, muscle relaxants, colds and allergies meds, antihistamines, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, ketoconazole, pain medications, contraceptives, cimetidine, or fluoxetine, as they can add to the side effects Valium causes. They can also cause other symptoms that can be quite unpleasant and even dangerous. Make sure you tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as taking Valium may harm an unborn baby. In case of a missed dose take it as soon as possible unless it's almost time for the next one – in that case just skip the one you missed and carry on with the treatment.
